    Lesson #5- On volume and emphasis. I teach adults, but I'm outside all day. I've learned to speak the same way as a musician plays an instrument. Music needs to move and be alive. A speaking voice needs to do the same. Not a steady monotone volume. Change keeps the audiences attention. The power of the "pause" is so important. When I'm presenting a new thought, I create a pregnant pause, and usually drop my voice volume significantly. Just as in music, change is key to keeping the message alive.

    I sooo wish pastors of churches took your course!! Very frustrating to listen to well meaning pastors ramble around their message. Many of them are stuck in a rut, reading from their notes (some times word for word right of the page).

    What if you have several goals in your mind (getting a good job, having your own side job, developing my hobbies,getting in shape)? Do you develop some kind of lifestyle around all this? I feel like this right now, I lot that I want, it's like to much to choose from, so I sit down and do nothing 😔

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon 2 дні тому

      What I've heard (and what I practice) is to focus on just one or two big goals at a time. Otherwise, having too many big goals can be paralyzing. So, what is your most important long-term goal? Whatever it is, get to work on that and put your efforts into that until you see great progress.

    this is not an extemporaneous delivery, this is called speaking naturally. Extemporaneous delivery is absolutely spontaneous and does not require much preparation besides being aware of the main points

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon 2 дні тому

      That’s a common misunderstanding of the word. In the world of public speaking, in textbooks, and in speaking competitions, the word extemporaneous is used to describe prepared speeches that are delivered in a conversational way from limited notes. What you’re describing is called, “impromptu” speaking. With that type of speech, a speaker is not allowed more than a few moments of preparation. They are given a prompt or a question, and they are expected to come up with a speech “off the cuff.” The word extemporaneous is not merely about how a speech is delivered, it also has to do with the way of speech is prepared beforehand.

    • @Matt-iy2cf
      @Matt-iy2cf День тому

      @@alexanderlyon language evolves. If the current understanding is that the word extemporaneous describes speaking from an outline, then embrace it instead of arguing about the definition of the word. There is nothing extemporaneous about being well prepared for the talk.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon 23 години тому

      There's no debate here. You're repeating the most common misunderstanding about these two words as they are used to describe public speaking. I hear this all the time. Here's the definition from the 2023 instructor's edition of the most popular Public Speaking book in the entire world ( *_The Art of Public Speaking_* , by Stephen Lucas). "1. Extemporaneous speeches are carefully prepared and practiced in advance. 2. They are presented from a set of notes, but the exact wording is chosen at the moment of delivery." (Chapter 13: Delivery). In contrast, you described extemporaneous speaking as "absolutely spontaneous," which is incorrect and you say that "there's nothing extemporaneous about being prepared for the talk." What you're describing in both posts is called Impromptu speaking. The same book describes Impromptu speaking like this: "Impromptu speeches are presented with little or no immediate preparation." (Chapter 13: Delivery). Here's a quotation from the up-to-date and well-sourced Wikipedia page, "Extemporaneous Speaking," that says exactly what Public Speaking books say: "When searching [Google] for 'extemporaneous', the person will find that "impromptu" is a synonym for 'extemporaneous"'. However, for speech delivery styles, *_this is not the case_* . An extemporaneous speech is planned and practiced, but when delivered, is not read. Presenters will normally rely on small notes or outlines with key points. This type of delivery style is recommended because audiences perceive it as more conversational, natural, and spontaneous, and it will be delivered in a slightly different manner each time, because it’s not memorized." In summary, as the sources above explain, an extemporaneous speech is planned, prepared, and practiced. An impromptu speech is done spontaneously without [much] time to prepare. Both, however, are delivered in the moment in a natural conversational style. This leads many people to confuse the two types of speeches.

    I don't know about the best way, but the most FUN way to handle it, is to just not stop talking until you've finished your sentence: key point, and this is crucial, without raising your voice. It's fun because they're ALWAYS indignant about it. They accuse YOU of talking over THEM. I don't do this anymore, but there was a period where this is all I would do, and it always made me happy in how much it annoyed them.

    I find it hard at times, because I lack empathy for those situations which occurred in the foundation years. As a kid I was unaware of appropriate reactions because of what I was put through and told I was being disrespectful, terms a kid can't fully grasp. But I could grasp the physical retribution.
